New Years. I’m going to write something every day. Oscar & I went to the movies tonight. Gilda Gray in Alora of the South Sea Mostly Shining.

Sunday,    Jan 2                                     fair & warm

Fair. Took Jean sleighing the a.m. and Oscar and I went out to Foye’s with Dolly in the p.m.. Saw a lot of partridge. Ruth didn’t go home. She isn’t missed by a good deal.

Monday,   Jan 3                                     air & quite warm

School began today. We got up early a.m. Oscar’s back is still sore. Ruth got home early and we took Jean for a ride then Oscar & I went down and did some errands. Jean doesn’t show any signs of  measles yet.

Tuesday, Jan 4        Tuesday           cloudy & cold

Six below this a.m. Didn’t take Jean out today. It began to snow about two o’clock. Went over to Mrs. White’s a few minutes. Made three pies & etc.

Wednesday,  Jan 5                               fair & warm

Mr. Bailey took Lucy over a horse. Left home about ten and got back about five. I harnessed Dan in the p.m. and Jean & I went down street, brought back a load of girls. Mildred came in to see Jeans Xmas presents. I collected eggs at night. Got fifteen.

Thursday,  Jan 6                                    fair & cold

Went over to Mrs. White’s in the a.m. to see if she wanted to go down st. with me. Began to snow out. Jean and I went alone. Mrs. White had company so she couldn’t go.  Stewart was in in the afternoon. Jean was two hrs. going to bed.

Friday,  Jan 7                                             fair & cold

Stayed home all day. Put up a stove in our room upstairs.

Saturday,  Jan 8                                     fair & cold

Did Sats. work. Took jean sleighing & then Oscar & I went down st and got a hair cut. Did some errands. Ruth went to the movies.

Sunday,  Jan 9                                        fair & cold

We didn’t get up until eight ‘o clock. Mrs. White came over. I stayed in all day. Jean has a bad cold.

Monday,  Jan 10                                   cloudy & cold

Stayed home all day. Jean has more cold. Oscar got his truck license today. Joker fell down and broke the sled shaft.

Tuesday,  Jan 11                                   cloudy & cold

Looks a lot like snow. Oscar carried the milk in the truck today. Began to snow about 12:30 p.m. Stayed in all day. Getting to be a habit. Jean put on one of her new bands today.

Wednesday, Jan 12                            fair & cold

Worked all a.m. thru p.m. Oscar & I went down to watch Stewart move the keel. The bridge held o.k. Went in to see the Harveys. I hope to see ” Alices Irish Rose” Friday if Jean goes to sleep in time I may go sleigh riding this evg. Harry went foxing today. Went sleighing. Jean slept all evg.

Thursday, Jan 13                                 fair & cold

The hounds haven’t come back yet. Harry has gone to hunt for them. Went down street for a sleigh ride & changed my book. Kiko arrived this p.m. pretty hungry.

Friday, Jan 14                                       rain & warmer

Didn’t get to see Alice’s Irish Rose after all. Damn the luck. Went down street the p.m. a little while. Harry drove about thirty miles hunting for his dog. Sandy was hungry when he got back.

Saturday, Jan 15                                  warm & snowing

Began to snow and changed to rain. Rained most all the day. I went down street in the p.m. Telephoned and changed my books. Growing cold.

Sunday, Jan 16                                     snow & cold

Snowed all day. Oscar took Dan this a.m. Ruth didn’t go home. Jean was about two hrs going to sleep. Stayed in all day. Nobody been here. Hunter hasn’t come back either. Roads will be full by morning.

Monday, Jan 17                                      cloudy & cold

Snow flurries all day. Oscar got the Ford out again. Harry got a fox with Kiko. Only took two hrs. Ruth went to see the Dentist. Jean and I stayed home all day. I finished my Library books. 1. Far to Seek 2. The Battle Ground

Tuesday, Jan 18                                      fair & cold

Mr. Bailey went to Dresden with Dolly. Mrs. White & Jean & I went down st. with Old Dan. I got two new books. “Jenny the Carrier” & “The Marksman Mystery.” Mr. Foster Perkins shot himself this morning. Terrible for his family. Harry went gunning.

Wednesday, Jan 19                               cloudy & warm

Did work this a.m. My dress came also lilacs from Alice. Went down to see Dot this p.m.. Ruth went home to stay all night. She expects more time off than an old soldier. Harry went gunning. Kiko holed the fox.

Thursday, Jan 20                                   cloudy & warm

Harry found the dogs over in Dresden. I went down st. in the a.m. Stores all closed. A horse dropped dead on the bridge. Ruth came back. Jean was sixteen months today.

Tuesday, Jan 21                                        cloudy & warm

Worked all a.m. Harry got two foxes. Took Jean sleigh riding in p.m. Ordered telephone. Went to Woolwich in evg. Had a flat tire & arrived home at 11:30. Jean slept all the evg.

Saturday, Jan 22                                     drizzly & warm

Worked etc. Jean wouldn’t have a nap. I tried to get her to sleep for two hrs. Ruth went down st. in the p.m. Oscar & I took Jean for a sleigh ride. I bought a sifter & egg beater. Went to the movies at night with Myra and found I had won four pr of silk stockings on her punch board.

Sunday, Jan 23                                          cloudy & cold

This has been a Day. Verna & Harry came up this p.m. Went out to go home & she fell on the ice & struck the back of her head & back. It hurt so she fainted and we were all pretty scared for awhile. Jean didn’t have a nap today and she was some tired tonight. Ruth went home & was late getting back as usual.

Monday, Jan 24                                           fair & cold

Did usual morning work. Took Jean sleigh riding in a.m. Mr. Bailey traded a cow for “Brian Boore.”   Hills sold their place to “Clint” Bailey. I finished one my books. ” The Purple Mist” The “Long Arm of Fantorras” is the other.

Tuesday, Jan 25                                          fair & cold

Did usual work in a.m. Went up to Shay’s in p.m. Took Ruth & Jean & went down st. after we got back & changed my books. Got two new ones. “The Dream” H.G. Wells, “The Man Without a Shadow”. Oscar & I went to the pictures at night. Saw a funny one “That’s My Baby.”

Wednesday, Jan 26                                  fair & very cold

Stayed in all day. Jean is either cutting teeth or taking measles. She has been awfully fussy and won’t eat very well. Ruth didn’t have to go to school today. I have been as far as the mail box. 8 below zero at 4 p.m.

Thursday, Jan 27                                       fair & cold

Yesterday was the coldest day yet. Jean is better today. Ruth had to go to school all day. “Mim” came tonight and took her home & took up the stuff to fix my black dress. “Sandy” went like a bird.

Friday, Jan 28                                           fair & warmer

Stayed home all day. Got hall tel. put in. I haven’t tried it yet. Mrs. White was ovr this a.m. I’m going to the Red Mens Installment tonight. Jean is o.k. tonight. Harry went gunning.                                                                                


Saturday, Jan 29                                      fair & warm

Went to the dance and had a great time. Jean never woke up. Took Jean for a short sleigh ride and went down st & got a hair cut. Ruth’s sister came up and they went to the pictures.

Sunday, Jan 30                                         rain

Girls went home this a.m. Jesse White was in before we had breakfast. Oscar & Harry butchered a cow. Stayed in all day.

Monday, Jan 31                                         fair & windy

Stayed in all day. Washed, ironed etc. Going to a dance with Oscar tonight. Harry helped do the work. Mr. B’s cold is worse. Jean is going “out like a lion.”

February 1927

February 1, 1927  Friday                          fair & windy

Mr. B’s cold quite bad. Harry helped to do the work. Went down to Myra Carlton’s this a.m. and got my stockings. Took Jean. Maxine had been sick all day. Dance at the Hotel Thursday night. Oscar has about half his cow sold.

Wednesday, Feb 2                                      fair & heavy wind

Mr. B has been in all day. Jean & I watched the horses & went to see the cows. I went down st with Oscar this p.m. Guess we will go to the dance tomorrow night. The Old Ground Hog must have seen his shadow all right. I finished my books. “Anybody But Ame” & ” Where the Souls of Men are Calling”

Thursday,  Feb 3                                         cold & snow at night

Stayed home all day. Mrs White came over in p.m. Went to Hotel dance at night. Had a good time. Quite a good crowd there. Ruth was sick all day. Better tonight. Jean slept all evening.

Friday, Feb 4                                                 fair & windy

Enough snow for sleighing. Mr. B is still in the house. Bessie wants to come over next week for a few days. I went down st this afternoon. Old Sandy nearly got away from me. Good thing I left Jean home. Harry got a fox. It’s growing cold tonight again.

Saturday, Feb 5                                         fair & cold

Did Sats. work. Took Ruth down st with Joker & he took a shaft out of the sleigh. Too cold to take Jean, but Oscar & I went to the movies. They were rotten.

Sunday, Feb 6                                            snow & cold

Ruth didn’t go home. She & Mr. B stayed with Jean while I went out to Whitten’s after Oscar. We drove Baron home and let Old Sandy run loose. He certainly is a game old bird. We were both cold & hungry but Oscar was sick and couldn’t eat.

Monday, Feb 7                                            fair & cold

Mr. B’s still laid out & I’m chore boy. I like it pretty well. Oscar has all he can attend to and can help out a little. Jean & I went down after Ruth this p.m. then I went down again with the truck.

Tuesday, Feb 8                                         fair & cold

 Oscar went to Dresden after his bull. While Jean & I was down after Ruth, two deer got over board in the creek. Mr. White got them out on to the ice after awhile. I did all the work, even cleaning out the barn. Jean stays with her Grandfather good.

Wednesday, Feb 9                                 fair & warmer

Did usual things. Mr. B is still in the house. Frank Savage was over. I took Jean for a sleigh ride, then came  back and harnessed Baron and took Ralph for a ride. We went over home in the evening. Frank gave Oscar a dog. I hope it’s some good.

Thursday, Feb 10                                  fair & warm

Regular skiing day. Took Jean for a sleigh ride, then drove Baron again.

Friday, Feb 11                                          fair & warm

Did usual work. Ruth went to school supper. Oscar & I went to Carlton’s in the evening.

Saturday, Feb 12                                   fair & warm

Took Jean sleigh riding then drove Baron. Changed my books & bought a Love Story. Winifred & Ruth went to the movies.

Sunday, Feb 13                                     

Ruth went home. Oscar & I took Jean for a ride & found George Merrill here when we got back. Harry & Verna up at night. Hattie Mosher has a boy.

Monday, Feb 14                                     cold & snowing

Blair’s Birthday.  Snowed all day. About eight inches all together. Helped do the chores. Mr. B has been in two weeks today. Went down st this a.m. to dentist. Ruth went to Valentine party. Mrs. White went to Boston.

Tuesday, Feb 15                                    fair & warmer

Did usual work. Took eggs down st with Dan. Took Jean too. We went to library. Myra & I went to the movies at night.

Wednesday, Feb 16                            fair & warm

Everything about the same. I left Jean with her grandfather while I drove Baron to Shay’s. Began to snow quite hard tonight. Harry had to wash tonight, so we are late getting thru.

Thursday, Feb 17                               

Made mince meat all day. What a job. Oscar & I went down st on the horse sled & broke the roads out. We both got a hair cut & went to the dance. Had a good time. Jean was awake when I got home which is quite unusual. She has been sick to her tummy.

Friday, Feb 18                                       warm & snowing

Oscar took the horse this a.m. it’s such hard wheeling. I’ve made two pies & have my mince meat in cooking.

Saturday, Feb 19                                cloudy& cold

Arose at 5 a.m. & finished canning my mince meat. Had seventeen quarts. did my chores & got the 8:27 for Bath. Alice is looking pretty thin. She is going to see the Dr. again Monday. Oscar met me the p.m. with the truck. Ruth took good care of Jean & did a lot of work.

Sunday, Feb 2o                                   cold & snowing

Had a horse to go out at nine. Ruth took him down to Harry. We have been out and done the chores. Sandy came home himself. Earned three dollars.

Monday, Feb 21                                   cold & snowing

I took a telephone man up to Sheepscot with Baron. We had to break our roads all the way. Quite a ride. We earned five dollars anyway. Ruth is having vacation everything happened o.k.

Tuesday, Feb 22                                  warmer & pleasant

The sun shone today for the first time for a week. I took Jean for a ride. She hadn’t been out for a week. Ruth has gone to the dance. Kathryn didn’t get over, so I didn’t bother to go. Harry went gunning & fired four times at a fox.

Wednesday, Feb 23                                 cloudy & warm

Ruth got huffy and left this a.m. Connie Foye & Leslie Riley were up here this p.m. with their kids. Jean had a glorious time. I sent Willard a mail order. Mr. B doesn’t feel very good. Stewart traded a cow with Sam Foye for a horse. Guess I’ll sell Sam Sandy. Finished my books. Neither very good.

Thursday, Feb 24                                     fair & warm

Let Sandy to a couple Jews. Went down street this p.m. with Oscar. Took Jean. Changed my books. Frank Savage was over to see us again.

Friday, Feb 25                                          fair & warm

Let Baron to the Jews and they drove him  to Kings Mills. He was tired out. Oscar went to meet them. We will have to charge them plenty. Elbridge Cunningham was here to supper. Hattie Mosher lost her baby.

Saturday, Feb 26                                 snow & wind

Worst storm of winter. Oscar didn’t carry the milk. Went down in his snow shoes & did the errands. The roads are blocked everywhere.

Sunday, Feb 27                                     fair

Oscar & Harry shoveled Joker a path thru the field this noon. didn’t get home until four o’clock. The breaking out crew got as far as Bythers. I watered the cows & horses & looked after the hens. Grovers didn’t get in with their milk yesterday or today.

Monday Feb 28

Last day of February. Very calm & uneventful. The men finished shoveling the road out. Jean had a long nap and I watered the horses & cows. Oscar didn’t get home until 3:30.
